WASHINGTON — Pakistan and the United States reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations with a renewed focus on trade, investment, regional peace, and emerging technologies, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar confirmed following high-level talks in Washington.
During his official visit, Senator Dar held a significant meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the State Department. The engagement marked their first in-person dialogue following earlier telephonic discussions, and it laid the foundation for an expanded strategic partnership between the two nations.
Key Highlights of the Pakistan–U.S. Meeting:
1. Trade & Investment Expansion
The two sides expressed optimism over the ongoing Pakistan–U.S. trade dialogue, highlighting opportunities in agriculture, mining, clean energy, fintech, and artificial intelligence (AI). Dar noted that Pakistan offers a business-friendly environment and invited U.S. companies to explore lucrative investment opportunities.
2. Counter-Terrorism & Security Cooperation
Secretary Rubio acknowledged Pakistan’s sacrifices in the global war on terror, stating that Islamabad has played a “positive and stabilizing role in global and regional peace.” The leaders agreed to enhance counter-terrorism (CT) cooperation, especially in intelligence-sharing and capacity-building.
3. Regional and Global Peace Efforts
Dar commended the role of former President Donald Trump and U.S. leadership in promoting de-escalation during recent Pakistan-India tensions. The two sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to maintaining regional stability and close coordination in multilateral forums, including the UN Security Council.
4. Technology & Innovation
Dar emphasized the potential for collaboration in the IT and AI sectors, underlining the importance of innovation-driven growth. Both leaders welcomed public-private partnerships to boost digital connectivity and tech entrepreneurship.
Statements from the Meeting
“There is great alignment between our two countries on promoting economic growth, peace, and technological progress,” said Senator Dar.
“The Pakistani-American diaspora continues to serve as a bridge between our nations,” he added.
Secretary Rubio said, “Pakistan has always demonstrated resilience and cooperation in global affairs. We look forward to building a stronger, multi-sectoral partnership.”
Both leaders agreed to:
1. **Fast‑track the current trade‑dialogue round and convene a business‑investment conference later this year.
2. **Strengthen CT coordination through enhanced intelligence‑sharing and capacity‑building programs.
3. **Expand educational exchanges and skills‑training initiatives in emerging technologies.
The meeting marks the first in‑person encounter between Dar and Rubio, following several telephone discussions earlier this year, and underscores a shared intent to advance a “comprehensive, forward‑looking Pakistan‑U.S. partnership.”
