
Pakistan Envoy Meets WHO Regional Director in Cairo

CAIRO — Pakistan’s Ambassador to Egypt, Aamir Shouket, met with Dr. Hanan Balkhy, Regional Director of the World Health Organization’s Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (WHO EMRO), in Cairo to discuss avenues for enhanced health cooperation and regional health priorities.
During the meeting, Ambassador Shouket underscored Pakistan’s commitment to advancing health sector collaboration with WHO, particularly in areas of communicable disease control, maternal and child health, and strengthening health systems.
He praised WHO EMRO’s role in supporting member states in addressing shared health challenges and reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to meeting international health goals under the WHO framework.
Dr. Hanan Balkhy, WHO’s Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, highlighted the organization’s ongoing efforts to improve health outcomes across the region.
She welcomed Pakistan’s active engagement with WHO programs and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration to tackle regional health emergencies, support immunization campaigns, and enhance preparedness and response capacities.
Both sides agreed on the need for closer cooperation on health security, pandemic preparedness, and capacity-building initiatives.
They also discussed strategies for addressing the social determinants of health and advancing progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly universal health coverage.
Ambassador Shouket expressed appreciation for WHO’s longstanding partnership with Pakistan, noting the organization’s support for polio eradication, COVID-19 response, and broader public health initiatives.
