Pakistan Explores Green Economy Collaboration with Rwanda, Says Climate Minister
Pakistan is keen to establish a green partnership with Rwanda to advance shared environmental goals and boost sustainable development, said Dr. Shazra Mansab Kharal, Minister of State for Climate Change, during a high-level meeting with Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier J.P. Nduhungirehe in Islamabad on Tuesday.
The meeting underscored mutual interest in expanding bilateral cooperation through environmental initiatives, trade diversification, and cultural exchange.
Pakistan Eyes Green Investment and Export Growth
Dr. Mansab emphasized Pakistan’s intent to promote exports of key sectors including sports goods, surgical instruments, and pharmaceuticals, highlighting Rwanda as a promising market. She praised Rwanda’s forward-thinking environmental policies, especially its landmark 2008 plastic bag ban, as a model for sustainable development.
“Environmental conservation is a global responsibility, and Pakistan is committed to stronger climate action through legal reforms and projects like ‘Recharge Pakistan’ aimed at building climate resilience,” she said.
Rwanda recognizes Pakistan’s climate leadership.
Foreign Minister Nduhungirehe expressed Rwanda’s willingness to cooperate on climate technology, commended Pakistan’s flagship 10 Billion Tree Tsunami initiative, and cited the ongoing transformation into a carbon neutral city as an example of Rwanda’s climate leadership.
Agreement on Green Technology and Technical Exchange
Both sides agreed to explore technical cooperation, green technology investments, and policy exchanges to support mutual climate ambitions. The ministers also stressed the need for climate justice and global collaboration in the face of rising environmental challenges.
Dr. Mansab reaffirmed Pakistan’s resolve to advance climate legislation, even in the face of opposition from industrial sectors resistant to plastic regulations.
