Pakistan Gears Up for 14th South Asian Games with Strategic Preparations

Report by Rehman Ali

Federal Ministers Ahsan Iqbal and Rana Sanaullah reviewed preparations for the highly anticipated 14th South Asian Games, set to take place in Pakistan from January 23 to January 31, 2026. The meeting, attended by key government officials and sports authorities, focused on infrastructure, athlete training, and logistical arrangements.

During the session, Secretary IPC Zahoor Ahmed provided an update on ongoing preparations, emphasizing Pakistan’s commitment to hosting the prestigious event. Training camps for various sports, including volleyball, wrestling, weightlifting, taekwondo, athletics, and hockey, are being planned, with foreign coaches expected to be hired for selected disciplines.

It was revealed that Lahore, Faisalabad, Narowal, and Islamabad will serve as host cities for different sporting events. Additionally, work is underway to establish a dedicated South Asian Games Secretariat to streamline operations.

Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal described the event as a moment of pride for Pakistan, highlighting its significance in promoting the country’s soft image and reinforcing its capability to host international sporting events. Given that most competitions will be held in Punjab, he emphasized the province’s key role in ensuring the Games’ success.

To optimize venue selection and event management, a sub-committee led by the Secretary IPC will conduct site visits across all host cities and submit recommendations in the next review meeting. The Punjab government has assured full support, particularly in Lahore, to facilitate seamless event execution.

Authorities also discussed security measures, logistics, athlete training, and infrastructure upgrades, with instructions for immediate action to finalize all necessary preparations.

With these strategic efforts in motion, Pakistan aims to deliver a well-organized and successful 14th South Asian Games, showcasing its sporting potential on an international stage.
