ISLAMABAD — Pakistan has officially presented a replica of the iconic Fasting Buddha statue to Vietnam’s Bai Dinh Pagoda, the country’s largest Buddhist temple.
The symbolic handover ceremony took place under the leadership of Pakistan’s Ambassador to Vietnam, Kohdayar Marri, highlighting Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to promote interfaith harmony and preserve its Buddhist heritage. The event was detailed in an official press release from the Foreign Office on Saturday.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Marri underscored the significance of the gift:
“This replica reflects Pakistan’s rich historical legacy and deep respect for all religions. Tolerance, peace, and mutual understanding are at the heart of Islam — and cultural exchanges like these strengthen diplomatic bridges and people-to-people ties.”
The Fasting Buddha statue is one of the most revered artifacts from Pakistan’s ancient Gandhara civilization, dating back to the 2nd century CE. The original sculpture — unearthed in Sikri, Pakistan, and currently housed in the Lahore Museum — depicts Prince Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha) in a state of intense asceticism during his spiritual quest for enlightenment.
Prior to its placement at Bai Dinh Pagoda in Ninh Binh Province, the statue was blessed during a special Buddhist prayer session at the Pakistani Embassy in Hanoi, led by Most Venerable Thich Duc Thien, Secretary General of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha.
Upon its arrival at Bai Dinh Pagoda, the statue was warmly received by Most Venerable Thich Minh Quang in a traditional Buddhist ritual. The event was attended by senior Vietnamese government officials, religious leaders, diplomats, and cultural dignitaries.
Venerable Minh Quang praised the gift as a powerful symbol of inter-religious goodwill and cultural respect, stating:
“This remarkable gesture from Pakistan strengthens spiritual ties and enhances mutual understanding between our two nations.”
The Fasting Buddha replica, representing themes of resilience, self-discipline, and spiritual endurance, serves as a symbol of Pakistan’s dedication to interfaith dialogue and the promotion of peaceful coexistence.
The ceremony concluded with prayers for lasting friendship between Pakistan and Vietnam — a relationship that continues to deepen through cultural diplomacy and shared heritage.
