Pakistan Imposes Ban on Bringing Multiple Mobile Phones from Abroad

Pakistan’s Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has amended its baggage rules, limiting incoming travelers to bringing only one mobile phone for personal use. Under the revised regulations, any additional phones brought into the country will be confiscated upon arrival at the airport.

The new draft, which is part of the 2006 baggage rules update, specifies that passengers can carry one mobile phone per person for personal use, but if they bring more than one, it will be seized. The amendment also sets a cap on the total value of goods travelers can bring in, restricting it to $1,200. If the goods exceed this value, they will be confiscated, regardless of whether duties have been paid.

FBR officials clarified that the regulations are designed to stop the illegal trade of mobile phones. Many travelers had previously claimed multiple phones as personal items to avoid taxes, but this practice will no longer be allowed. While the new rules are stricter, they do not apply to individuals engaged in the legitimate importation of mobile phones, who will continue to follow existing laws.

The FBR has announced a seven-day period for public consultation on the draft amendment, during which businesses and individuals can submit their feedback. Afterward, the final notification will be issued, marking the official implementation of the new policy.
