ISLAMABAD — Pakistan and Iran have agreed to deepen cooperation on the Silk Road Initiative and enhance maritime trade via the Gwadar–Chabahar corridor

The agreement came during a high-level joint session in Islamabad, attended by Iranian Minister for Roads and Urban Development Farzaneh Sadegh, who is accompanying President Masoud Pezeshkian on a state visit. Key Pakistani counterparts included Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan, Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan, and Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi.

The discussions focused on strengthening transportation networks, enhancing cross-border connectivity, and upgrading road infrastructure to facilitate smoother trade between the two countries. Both sides explored the expansion of maritime routes connecting Pakistan’s Gwadar Port with Iran’s Chabahar Port, strategically positioning the corridor as a critical link in regional trade and logistics chains.

Minister Sadegh emphasized Iran’s keen interest in becoming an active participant in the broader China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework under the Silk Road umbrella, aiming to unlock new economic opportunities across West and Central Asia.

Welcoming the Iranian delegation, Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan praised Iran’s resilience and stance against Israeli aggression, calling it a symbol of unity for the Islamic world.

“Pakistan and Iran share historic bonds. We must now translate that solidarity into deeper economic and logistical collaboration,” he said.

He invited the Iranian Minister to attend Pakistan’s upcoming Ministerial Transport Conference on October 23–24, 2025, which will include participation from over 20 countries.

To fast-track implementation, **Minister Abdul Aleem Khan proposed the creation of bilateral working groups** focusing on infrastructure, logistics, and cross-border transport regulation.

Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan briefed the Iranian team on the vast untapped trade potential in sectors such as agriculture, minerals, and textiles. He reaffirmed that both countries could serve as viable complementary markets, boosting two-way exports and investment.

Minister Aleem Khan proposed forming bilateral working groups to expedite project implementation, coordinate policy efforts, and monitor progress on agreed initiatives.

In response, Minister Farzaneh Sadegh thanked her hosts and praised Pakistan’s enduring support, describing her visit as “highly meaningful and fruitful.” She reaffirmed Iran’s full cooperation in all proposed transport and trade projects and expressed optimism for deeper engagement in the near future.
