Pakistan, Russia to Deepen Trade, Energy, Defence Cooperation

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan and Russia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen cooperation in trade, energy, agriculture, and defence, following high-level diplomatic talks on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in Tianjin, China.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday. According to a statement from the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office, both sides expressed satisfaction with the positive momentum in bilateral relations and agreed to broaden collaboration across key sectors.

During their discussions, the two ministers reviewed existing initiatives aimed at boosting bilateral trade and investment. They highlighted the importance of cooperation in energy and agriculture, critical sectors for both economies.

The talks also underscored the need for enhanced defence collaboration, including knowledge-sharing and potential joint projects to strengthen regional security and strategic stability.

Deputy Prime Minister Dar also reiterated Pakistan’s formal invitation for Foreign Minister Lavrov to visit Islamabad. Such a visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to bilateral dialogue and advance ongoing initiatives in economic and strategic areas.

The meeting took place on the margins of the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers meeting, which brings together top diplomats from across the Eurasian region to discuss regional security, connectivity, and economic cooperation.

Pakistan and Russia have consistently emphasized their shared interest in promoting regional stability and economic integration through multilateral platforms such as the SCO.

Both countries remain committed to enhancing diplomatic contacts and people-to-people exchanges, supporting greater understanding and trust between their societies.
