Riyadh- Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have signed a historic Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement (SMDA), pledging that any act of aggression against either country will be treated as an attack on both. The accord was formalized in Riyadh during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s state visit, hosted by Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman (MBS).

The signing ceremony at Al-Yamamah Palace marked a significant step in advancing defense cooperation between the two long-standing allies, reaffirming nearly eight decades of strategic partnership rooted in Islamic solidarity, brotherhood, and shared security interests.

According to a joint statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office, the agreement seeks to enhance defense collaboration and strengthen joint deterrence capabilities in the face of regional and global security threats.

“This agreement reflects the shared commitment of both nations to safeguarding peace and stability in the region and beyond,” the statement emphasized.

During official talks attended by delegations from both countries, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended warm greetings to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and expressed deep gratitude for Saudi Arabia’s hospitality.

The discussions reviewed the historic Pakistan-Saudi strategic relationship and explored avenues of mutual interest, including defense, economic cooperation, and regional stability.

In return, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman conveyed his best wishes for the well-being of Pakistan’s leadership and prosperity of its people, underlining the Kingdom’s enduring commitment to its “brotherly partner.”

The agreement builds upon decades of military, economic, and cultural cooperation between the two nations. Pakistan has long maintained close defense ties with Saudi Arabia, including the deployment of military advisers and joint training exercises.

Analysts believe the new pact will further solidify the strategic alignment of the two countries, especially amid shifting regional security dynamics in the Middle East and South Asia.
