Pakistan Seeks to Strengthen Kiwifruit Industry Through Sino-Collaboration

Agricultural experts are optimistic about Pakistan’s potential to emerge as a key player in the global kiwifruit market, following a recent International Training Workshop on Kiwifruit Production held in Sichuan, China. A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Sichuan Provincial Academy of Natural Resource Sciences and the University of Swabi, signaling a promising step toward enhanced Sino-Pak cooperation in kiwifruit cultivation.

Dr. Ruidar Ali Shah from the University of Swabi emphasized the immense growth potential of Pakistan’s kiwi industry, citing its favorable climate, fertile soil, and plentiful water resources. He noted that Pakistan’s strategic location provides easy access to markets in the Middle East, Central Asia, and Europe, which could give the country a competitive edge.

Dr. Muhammad Akhlaq from PMAS-Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi added that the climate in northern and hilly regions of Pakistan is particularly suitable for kiwifruit, which thrives in moderate temperatures and requires adequate rainfall. The rising demand for kiwifruit both locally and internationally, combined with a substantial agricultural workforce, presents a significant opportunity for Pakistan.

During the two-week workshop, experts from Pakistan, Egypt, Nepal, and Mongolia learned about various aspects of kiwifruit production, including germ-plasma collection, breeding techniques, pest management, and post-harvest marketing. Dr. Shah highlighted the advanced technology and practices used in China, particularly in Sichuan, which could be adapted to suit Pakistan’s unique conditions.

Experts expressed hope that Chinese innovations, such as disease-resistant varieties and efficient storage techniques, could help Pakistan overcome challenges like climate variability and pest control. The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) offers a platform for collaboration on agricultural projects, paving the way for potential kiwifruit exports from Pakistan as production ramps up.

Under the newly signed MoU, the Sichuan Provincial Academy and the University of Swabi will focus on capacity building, educational training, research initiatives, and the organization of workshops, aimed at advancing the kiwifruit industry and fostering resource conservation.
