Pakistan Strengthens Economic and Diplomatic Ties, Aims for Growth: Ambassador Sheikh
Pakistan is on a path to economic recovery and institutional reform, with a firm commitment to strengthening democracy and fostering trade relations, Ambassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh said at an exclusive diplomatic event in Washington.
Speaking at The Washington Diplomat’s “Ambassador Insider Series,” Ambassador Sheikh outlined Pakistan’s recent economic progress, its role in regional stability, and efforts to attract sustainable foreign investment. The event brought together U.S. policymakers, think tanks, business leaders, and media professionals, offering a platform to discuss Pakistan’s evolving economic and diplomatic strategy.
Economic Recovery and Investment Potential
Highlighting key economic indicators, Ambassador Sheikh emphasized that Pakistan has made remarkable strides in controlling inflation, which fell from a staggering 38% in mid-2023 to just 4.1% by the end of 2024. This decline, he noted, is a direct result of comprehensive policy measures designed to stabilize the economy.
“Pakistan is entering a new phase of economic resilience,” he stated. “Our government is committed to reforms that promote growth, encourage investments, and create opportunities for global partnerships.”
He underscored Pakistan’s growing IT sector, noting that the country has emerged as the second-largest contributor to IT freelancing worldwide, following the United States. “Our skilled workforce and competitive pricing make Pakistan a prime destination for IT outsourcing,” he added, urging U.S. firms to tap into this rapidly expanding market.
Additionally, he highlighted Pakistan’s expertise in manufacturing high-quality sports goods and surgical instruments, industries that have long maintained a strong international reputation.
Expanding U.S.-Pakistan Trade Relations
The Ambassador reaffirmed the importance of U.S.-Pakistan trade, pointing out that the United States remains Pakistan’s largest trading partner. He described trade as the most stable pillar of bilateral relations and pledged to strengthen commercial linkages.
“My foremost priority as Ambassador is to expand economic diplomacy and create new opportunities for businesses in both countries,” he said.
He also encouraged U.S. corporations to explore Pakistan’s business-friendly policies and take advantage of incentives designed to attract foreign investors. He cited multinational giants like Procter & Gamble, PepsiCo, and Nestlé, which have successfully leveraged Pakistan’s strategic economic positioning.
CPEC and Strategic Connectivity
Discussing regional trade, Ambassador Sheikh described the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as a transformative initiative that connects China with Middle Eastern and African markets. He dismissed concerns that Pakistan is caught in geopolitical competition, emphasizing instead that the country plays a crucial role in bridging global economies.
“Pakistan is open to partnerships from all nations,” he asserted. “We encourage American companies to explore investment opportunities in our infrastructure, energy, and trade sectors.”
Commitment to Security and Counterterrorism
Turning to security challenges, Ambassador Sheikh reiterated Pakistan’s resolve in combating terrorism and maintaining regional stability. He acknowledged the legacy of militancy from past conflicts and assured that Pakistan is taking robust measures to secure its borders and counter extremist threats.
“Pakistan has been a frontline state in the fight against terrorism, and we continue to work closely with global partners to ensure peace in the region,” he stated.
Climate Change and Sustainable Development
Ambassador Sheikh also highlighted Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate change, noting that the country is actively working with international organizations like the World Bank and the IMF to develop long-term climate resilience strategies.
“Our focus has shifted from reacting to disasters to proactively preparing for climate challenges,” he said, adding that Pakistan is integrating climate policies into its national economic planning. He emphasized the need for global collaboration to support developing countries facing environmental risks.
Strengthening Diplomatic Engagement
Since taking office, Ambassador Sheikh has actively engaged with U.S. policymakers, having met with at least 40 members of Congress in recent weeks. His outreach efforts aim to reinforce longstanding U.S.-Pakistan relations while forging new alliances in trade, security, and climate initiatives.
“Pakistan seeks constructive partnerships based on mutual interests,” he noted. “We are neither aligned with one bloc nor caught in a geopolitical rivalry. Instead, we serve as a bridge between global powers, fostering cooperation rather than division.”
A Vision for the Future
Concluding his address, Ambassador Sheikh reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to democratic growth, economic stability, and international cooperation. He extended an open invitation to U.S. investors and policymakers to explore new avenues of collaboration, emphasizing that a strong Pakistan-U.S. relationship benefits both nations.
With a renewed focus on sustainable investment, diplomatic outreach, and economic resilience, Pakistan is positioning itself as a key player in international trade and regional security, setting the stage for long-term prosperity.
