ISLAMABAD — Pakistan on Tuesday assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for July 2025, reaffirming its commitment to the UN Charter, international law, and multilateralism.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced that Pakistan, during its 8th term as an elected UNSC member (2025–26), would prioritize peaceful conflict resolution and constructive diplomacy at a time of rising global tensions and humanitarian crises.
“Our presidency comes at a time of escalating conflicts and humanitarian crises around the world. We will strive to steer the Security Council towards responsive and effective action grounded in dialogue, diplomacy and peaceful dispute resolution,” Dar stated on X
He reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to serving with “humility, conviction, and profound commitment” to international law and multilateral efforts.
During Pakistan’s presidency, Dar will chair two major high-level events: a session on “Maintenance of International Peace and Security through Multilateralism & Peaceful Settlement of Disputes” on July 22, and another on “Cooperation Between the UN and the OIC” on July 24. He will also preside over the Council’s quarterly open debate on Palestine on July 23.
Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan stated that Pakistan’s approach will remain rooted in the UN Charter’s values, international law, and consistent multilateral engagement.
“As a nation that has always championed dialogue and diplomacy, Pakistan brings to the Security Council an objective, balanced, and principled outlook, shaped by its foreign policy and decades of peacekeeping contributions,” he noted.
The spokesperson explained that while formulating the Council’s Programme of Work for July, Pakistan applied a transparent, inclusive, and consultative strategy. He stressed that challenges to international peace — spanning the Middle East, South Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America — demand a Council that is both credible and effective.
“Pakistan remains dedicated to fostering substantive, results-driven deliberations while promoting inclusive participation and constructive dialogue across all agenda items,” Khan said.
He added, “Pakistan will act as a bridge between the Security Council and the broader UN membership, guided by the shared responsibility to maintain global peace and security.”
