Pakistan Urges Proper Contextual Understanding of Ceasefire, Cites Legitimate Defense Under UN Charter
Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan has emphasized the importance of viewing the recent India-Pakistan ceasefire in its correct context, stating that Pakistan exercised its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter in response to Indian aggression.
In an official statement, Khan confirmed that both Pakistan and India agreed to a ceasefire, effective from 4:30 PM local time. He stated that the ceasefire followed a series of unprovoked Indian attacks from May 7 to 10, during which BrahMos missiles were fired into Pakistani territory.
“These strikes resulted in civilian casualties, including women and children, and inflicted damage on religious sites and public infrastructure,” said the spokesperson.
He added that India deployed lethal drones targeting Pakistan’s federal capital and other areas, causing harm to both military and civilian assets. In response, Pakistan launched Operation Banyan Mursas, aiming only at precise Indian positions responsible for initiating hostilities.
“Our response was measured, limited, and carefully targeted to avoid civilian casualties,” Khan stressed. “Pakistan’s actions were fully aligned with international law and driven by the principle of self-defense.”
The statement concludes with a call for international understanding of the full picture, affirming that Pakistan remains committed to peace but will protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
