ISLAMABAD — Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday commended Saudi Arabia’s constructive role in promoting peace across the Middle East and its behind-the-scenes diplomacy that helped ease tensions during the brief military conflict between Pakistan and India in May.
During a meeting with Saudi Ambassador Nawaf Bin Said Al-Malki in Islamabad, Prime Minister Sharif acknowledged the Kingdom’s growing influence in supporting regional stability.
“Prime Minister lauded the Kingdom’s efforts for peace in the Middle East as well as its significant role in the ceasefire understanding between Pakistan and India,” read a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.
The acknowledgment comes amid revived hopes for a truce in Gaza, after US President Donald Trump urged Hamas to accept a proposed 60-day ceasefire with Israel on Tuesday. Gaza’s health ministry says over 56,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel’s military campaign began on October 7, triggering a humanitarian disaster and legal cases of genocide and war crimes at international courts — allegations Israel denies.
Saudi Arabia has played a significant diplomatic role alongside Egypt and Qatar to help broker humanitarian pauses in Gaza and facilitate aid, despite not recognizing Israel. Riyadh has stepped up its regional engagement to prevent further civilian casualties and avoid regional destabilization.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif further told the Saudi envoy that Pakistan had assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council on July 1, expressing hope for the Kingdom’s continued support in making Pakistan’s term a success.
In response, Ambassador Al-Malki expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s commitment to peace and regional stability, reaffirming Saudi Arabia’s enduring partnership with Islamabad.
The meeting underscored the deeply rooted strategic relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, built on shared diplomatic objectives, strong economic ties, and robust security cooperation. Over 2.5 million Pakistanis live and work in the Kingdom, which remains one of Pakistan’s largest financial supporters through oil supplies and cash assistance during repeated economic challenges.
