ISLAMABAD — Foreign Secretary Ambassador Amna Baloch on Tuesday stressed the critical need for principle-based development of artificial intelligence (AI) in military applications, emphasizing that human control and ethical oversight must remain paramount.

Speaking at the Regional Consultations on Responsible AI in the Military Domain (REAIM), Ambassador Baloch highlighted growing concerns over the use of autonomous weapons, particularly in conflict-prone regions like South Asia, where nuclear risk adds to the complexity.

In her keynote address, Ambassador Baloch highlighted that while military AI is rapidly transforming the nature of warfare, existing legal and political mechanisms are not keeping pace. She warned that this technological shift is occurring within a fragile international landscape, potentially lowering the threshold for conflict.

She cited examples from South Asia, where autonomous weapons have already been deployed in a nuclear environment, noting the concerning reduction in decision-making time during crises.

Ambassador Baloch stressed that global regulation of military AI must be anchored in the United Nations system, calling REAIM a valuable complementary platform. She urged the international community to prioritize capacity-building and regional dialogues, particularly for developing countries, to foster inclusive and responsible rule-making.
