PM Shehbaz, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon Agree to Expand Bilateral Cooperation Across Key Sectors
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon held extensive talks in Dushanbe on Thursday, reaffirming their commitment to advancing the Pakistan-Tajikistan strategic partnership in multiple sectors, including trade, energy, defence, connectivity, and counterterrorism.
The meeting, held during PM Sharif’s visit to attend the International High-Level Conference on Glaciers’ Preservation (ICGP), focused on reinforcing bilateral ties and exploring new areas of cooperation such as:
- Investment and economic collaboration
- Cultural and educational exchanges
- Information technology advancement
- People-to-people connectivity
During the meeting, both leaders recalled the landmark Strategic Partnership Agreement signed in July 2024, affirming their resolve to build upon shared values of history, culture, and geography. The leaders expressed satisfaction over existing cooperation and pledged to raise bilateral engagement to a new level.
On regional connectivity, the leaders reiterated their support for the CASA-1000 power project as a critical platform for regional integration. PM Sharif lauded the CASA-1000 Inter-Governmental Council held earlier this month and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to its swift implementation.
They agreed to operationalize mechanisms established during the 7th Pakistan-Tajikistan Joint Commission meeting and utilize twelve active Joint Working Groups to boost cooperation, particularly in the oil, gas, and energy sectors.
Both sides reviewed progress in defence and security cooperation, emphasizing joint efforts to combat terrorism, cross-border crime, and human trafficking. They committed to intensifying strategic coordination to address common security threats.
The leaders also exchanged views on regional peace and global affairs. PM Sharif congratulated President Rahmon on the peaceful resolution of the Tajik-Kyrgyz border dispute, praising his leadership.
In a strong message, PM Sharif denounced India’s actions since May 7 as unlawful and violative of international law. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s desire for peace while declaring unwavering resolve to defend its sovereignty. He also underscored the need to resolve the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.
President Rahmon expressed concern over recent South Asian developments and commended PM Sharif’s leadership in maintaining regional peace. He described Pakistan as a trusted partner and emphasized increased collaboration in science, agriculture, hydro power, tourism, and technology.

PM Sharif commended Tajikistan’s leadership in Water Diplomacy and congratulated President Rahmon on organizing the ICGP 2025. Prime Minister Sharif extended an invitation to President Rahmon for an official visit to Islamabad to further deepen bilateral cooperation.
