Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced to request a vote of confidence

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced plans to request a vote of confidence in his government following the defeat of his ally Rafał Trzaskowski in the presidential runoff, a loss that has sparked speculation over the durability of his multi-party coalition.

In a televised address on Monday, Prime Minister Tusk confirmed he would ask parliament to vote on his government’s mandate after conservative candidate Karol Nawrocki narrowly defeated liberal incumbent Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski. Nawrocki secured 50.89% of the vote in a closely watched election that highlighted deep national divisions.

Tusk acknowledged the outcome respectfully, stating, “Regardless of how we evaluate the winning candidate, we should acknowledge his victory and congratulate his voters.”

The loss has left Tusk politically weakened, casting doubt over whether his broad coalition can remain intact until the end of its term in late 2027. A successful confidence vote would reinforce his authority and affirm parliamentary support for his government.

Although Tusk emphasized that the presidential election “will not change anything” in the government’s course, analysts suggest the coalition may face increasing pressure amid growing conservative momentum.

Nawrocki is set to succeed outgoing President Andrzej Duda, whose final term concludes on August 6.

The election, which followed a tense and divided first round, underscored Poland’s political polarization within both the European Union and NATO’s eastern flank.

It remains uncertain when the vote of confidence will take place. However, the outcome will be critical in determining whether Tusk retains the authority to lead Poland through the remainder of his term.
