Pope Francis Diagnosed with Double Pneumonia, Condition Remains ‘Complex’
Pope Francis has been diagnosed with double pneumonia, complicating his recovery from bronchitis, according to an official statement from the Holy See Press Office. Despite his condition, the Pontiff remains in good spirits and continues to receive intensive medical care.
The statement, released Tuesday evening, confirmed that laboratory tests, chest X-rays, and clinical evaluations indicate a “complex picture” regarding the Pope’s health. The Holy Father, who has been hospitalized since Friday, is battling a polymicrobial infection, which has developed in the context of bronchiectasis and asthmatic bronchitis. This has required a combination of corticosteroids and antibiotics, making his treatment more challenging.
A follow-up CT scan conducted on Tuesday afternoon at the A. Gemelli Polyclinic Foundation revealed the onset of bilateral pneumonia, necessitating additional pharmacological therapy.
Despite these complications, Vatican officials report that Pope Francis remains in good spirits, continuing to engage in prayer, rest, and reading throughout the day. He has also received the Eucharist and extended his gratitude for the outpouring of support from faithful worldwide.
The Vatican has urged continued prayers for Pope Francis as he undergoes further medical treatment. His next health update is expected in the coming days.
