Pope Francis in Critical Condition After Severe Respiratory Crisis, Vatican Confirms
Pope Francis remains in critical condition after suffering a “prolonged asthma-like respiratory crisis,” the Vatican confirmed on Friday. The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been receiving treatment at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital since February 14, required blood transfusions and a high flow of oxygen due to a low platelet count linked to anemia.
Doctors diagnosed the Pope with double pneumonia, a severe lung infection that poses significant risks due to his age and medical history. Sergio Alfieri, a senior physician at the hospital, warned that if the infection spreads to his bloodstream, it could lead to sepsis, a life-threatening complication.
The Vatican stated that while Pope Francis remains alert, his health has worsened compared to the previous day, and his prognosis remains uncertain. Due to his condition, he will not be able to lead public prayers on Sunday, marking the second consecutive week he has missed the event.
Concerns over the Pope’s health have fueled speculation about a possible resignation, similar to his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI.
Pope Francis has faced recurring health issues in recent years, including previous lung infections exacerbated by pleurisy, a condition he developed in his youth that led to the partial removal of one lung. His current hospitalization has renewed discussions about the challenges of leading the Catholic Church at an advanced age.
The Vatican has assured the public that the Pope is receiving the best medical care, but his condition remains serious as the world watches closely.
