Pope Francis Passes Away at 88, Vatican Prepares for Conclave to Elect New Pontiff

Pope Francis, the 267th head of the Catholic Church and the first Jesuit pope, has died at the age of 88. The Vatican confirmed that the pontiff passed away peacefully at 7:35 AM in Rome following complications from a prolonged respiratory illness.

Appointed in 2013, Pope Francis—born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires—became known for his humility, progressive outlook, and dedication to social justice. His 12-year papacy was marked by a focus on poverty alleviation, climate change, refugee rights, and institutional reforms within the Vatican.

The late pope was hospitalized in February for double pneumonia and remained under medical care for over a month.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, announced the beginning of the interregnum period, during which cardinals will travel to Rome to elect the next pope. The conclave within 15 to 20 days.

Among the leading candidates to succeed Francis are Italian Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, and Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle. The election is likely to highlight ongoing divisions between reformists and conservatives within the Church.
