Pope Francis Receives Emergency Ventilation After Respiratory Complication
Pope Francis experienced a sudden respiratory complication on Friday afternoon due to an isolated bronchospasm, prompting immediate medical intervention, the Holy See Press Office confirmed.
The Pope, who has been receiving treatment for bilateral pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital since February 14, encountered difficulty breathing following an episode of vomiting that led to aspiration-related complications. In response, medical staff performed bronchial aspiration to clear his airways and placed him on non-invasive mechanical ventilation, which significantly improved his oxygen levels.
Despite the setback, the 86-year-old Pontiff has remained alert and cooperative throughout the treatment. His prognosis remains guarded, with doctors expected to reassess his condition within the next 24 to 48 hours.
Earlier in the day, Pope Francis alternated between respiratory physiotherapy and prayer in the chapel, demonstrating his resilience and faith amid his ongoing health challenges. He also received the Eucharist in the morning.
Medical sources indicate that thanks to ventilation support, the Pope’s gas exchange levels have stabilized, returning to pre-episode conditions.
