Over 100 Church leaders, clergy, laypeople, and abuse survivors from 25 European nations gathered in Rome this week for a three-day conference aimed at strengthening the Catholic Church’s safeguarding measures. The event, running from November 13 to 15, is organized by the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors as part of its ongoing mission to protect the vulnerable.
Pope Francis marked the opening of the conference with a letter that underscored the significance of this collective effort amid challenges, including war and political unrest in some countries. He praised attendees for showcasing unity that “transcends all borders,” urging them to build a network of collaboration focused on justice, healing, and reconciliation for abuse victims. The Pope’s message encouraged practical initiatives that reflect the Church’s commitment to its most vulnerable members.
Cardinal Seán O’Malley, President of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, addressed the conference through a video message, highlighting Europe’s rich diversity as a potential strength in creating comprehensive safeguarding solutions. Stressing the importance of listening to survivors, he stated, “Children are central to our faith,” and pointed to the need for balancing compassionate care with rigorous investigative processes.
This conference continues the trajectory set by the 2021 Warsaw gathering themed “Our Common Mission of Safeguarding God’s Children,” where Church representatives began collaborating to share knowledge and improve safeguarding practices. The current event aims to solidify these connections and ensure a sustainable network for future safeguarding endeavors.
