Pope Francis’s body transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City for public viewing
The body of Pope Francis has been solemnly moved to St. Peter’s Basilica, where he will lie in state ahead of the official funeral rites scheduled for this weekend.
The Vatican confirmed that the ritual transfer took place on Wednesday morning under the supervision of senior clergy, including the Camerlengo, in line with established papal traditions. The Pope’s simple coffin, reflecting his life of humility, was placed before the high altar, allowing the faithful to pay their final respects.
The basilica has been opened to the public, with thousands of mourners from around the world expected to visit. Visiting hours for the public will run daily until Friday evening, giving people a chance to honor the late pontiff.
Pope Francis passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, after suffering a massive stroke. His papacy, which began in 2013, was marked by major reforms, interfaith dialogue, and advocacy for the marginalized.
The funeral Mass will be held in St. Peter’s Square on Saturday, April 26, at 10:00 a.m. local time, led by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the Dean of the College of Cardinals. High-level delegations and religious leaders from across the globe are expected to attend.
In accordance with his final instructions, Pope Francis will be interred at the Basilica of St. Mary Major rather than the traditional papal crypt, marking another symbolic gesture in line with his legacy of simplicity and reform.
A nine-day mourning period known as the “Novemdiales” has been declared, during which churches around the world are conducting special services and memorials to honor his life and mission.
