Pope Leo XIV emphasized his commitment to continuing the path set by the late Pope Francis and identified artificial intelligence as a major challenge to social justice and human dignity in the modern era.

Speaking from the synod hall of the Vatican—a departure from the traditional apostolic palace setting—the newly elected pontiff urged cardinals to carry forward the Church’s mission rooted in compassion, humility, and reform. He called for renewed dedication to the legacy of Vatican II and the social teachings of the Church in response to what he described as a “new industrial revolution.”

Addressing the cardinals in fluent Italian, Pope Leo XIV stated, “Today, we face another revolution—driven by artificial intelligence—which raises new concerns about justice, labor, and the protection of human dignity. The Church must be at the forefront, offering guidance and moral clarity in these times of rapid change.”

The new pontiff also acknowledged the emotional weight of his election and expressed gratitude for the support of the cardinals. “This mission is far beyond the strength of any one person, but with your collaboration and God’s grace, we will walk this path together,” he said, specifically thanking Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re and Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell for their leadership during the transition.

Following the meeting, Pope Leo XIV made a significant spiritual visit to the Madonna del Buon Consiglio sanctuary in Genazzano, a revered site in Augustinian tradition. He prayed before the image of Mary and greeted local residents, saying, “It was important for me to begin my ministry by returning to the roots of my faith and devotion.”

The Vatican confirmed that Pope Leo XIV will appear again on Sunday from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to address an expected crowd of over 150,000 worshippers gathered in St. Peter’s Square.

Pope Leo XIV’s early actions signal a papacy firmly rooted in tradition yet responsive to the evolving social and technological realities of the 21st century.
