Lisbon, Portugal – The Portuguese government is actively evaluating the formal recognition of the State of Palestine, with a final decision expected in September 2025, according to an official statement released by the office of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro.
As part of a diplomatic consultation process, the Portuguese executive will coordinate with both President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and the national parliament before moving forward with a potential recognition of Palestinian statehood at the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York.
“Portugal is considering recognition of the Palestinian state as part of a broader foreign policy strategy. The process could reach its conclusion during the high-level UN General Assembly week in September,” the prime minister’s office confirmed.
The announcement places Portugal alongside several European nations reviewing their stance on Palestinian statehood, especially in the wake of mounting humanitarian concerns and prolonged conflict in the Gaza Strip and occupied West Bank.
If approved, the move would align Lisbon with over 140 countries that have already acknowledged Palestine as a sovereign state, reinforcing global pressure to revive the stalled two-state solution and establish a viable framework for peace in the Middle East.
The recognition would also signal Portugal’s commitment to multilateral diplomacy, human rights, and international law, according to regional analysts.
In recent months, several EU members — including Spain, Ireland, and Norway — have either recognized or voiced strong support for Palestinian statehood. Their moves have drawn both international praise and Israeli condemnation, underscoring the deep political divide on the issue.
Portugal’s potential recognition would mark a significant shift in its Middle East policy and could influence additional EU states to follow suit during the upcoming UN General Assembly.
