Lisbon — Portugal has announced it will officially recognize the State of Palestine on Sunday, September 21, just before the United Nations General Assembly convenes in New York, where several other countries are expected to follow suit.
The Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the decision in a statement released on its website.
Lisbon’s move comes as around 10 other nations prepare to extend formal recognition to Palestine at the UN session, reflecting mounting international support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
In June 2025, demonstrators in Lisbon gathered outside the Portuguese Parliament, urging lawmakers to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state. Portugal’s announcement is widely seen as both a response to public sentiment and a diplomatic effort to reinforce Middle East peace initiatives.
By recognizing Palestine, Portugal reaffirms its commitment to peace, justice, and international law, while highlighting that lasting stability in the Middle East requires a negotiated settlement between Israelis and Palestinians.
