Following the martyrdom of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, several names are circulating as potential successors. His younger brother, Commander Muhammad Sinwar, is regarded as a strong candidate for the leadership position.
Muhammad Sinwar, aged 49, is one of the senior commanders in Hamas’s military branch and has actively participated in numerous attacks against the Israeli military, including the events of October 7. He is among the most wanted Hamas commanders by Israel.
Israel has conducted multiple attacks aimed at assassinating Muhammad Sinwar, but he has consistently managed to evade capture. His status within Hamas is highly regarded.
Another potential candidate is Khalil al-Hayya, a prominent negotiator and head of Hamas in Gaza. He has played a pivotal role in ceasefire negotiations in Egypt and Qatar and is viewed as a close associate and deputy of Yahya Sinwar.
Al-Hayya’s chances of leadership appear to be enhanced by the fact that military leaders involved in the October 7 attacks have largely been killed, leaving only political leaders to take the helm.
Khaled Mashal is also a potential candidate for leadership. Having served as the head of Hamas from 2004 to 2017, he is considered one of the strongest contenders for the role. However, he has been designated a global terrorist by the U.S. and currently resides in Qatar.
Khaled Mashal was only deprived of leadership following Yahya Sinwar’s military power, which solidified Sinwar’s position within the organization.
Hossam Badran, 58, is one of Hamas’s most prominent public spokespersons. Although he has participated in military operations, his primary focus has been on public relations and politics.
Lastly, 69-year-old Mohammad Abu Anas Shabana, an experienced commander and head of Hamas’s military, is also seen as a potential candidate. He remains one of the last surviving prominent leaders, currently overseeing his forces in Rafah.
