The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F)** have agreed on a unified draft for the 26th Constitutional Amendment**, marking a significant step towards comprehensive constitutional reforms. The decision was announced following a three-hour meeting between Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari at Bilawal House on Tuesday.
Addressing a joint press conference, Maulana Fazlur Rehman said, “We have discussed the proposed amendment, and an agreement has been reached with the PPP on the draft.”
Maulana further mentioned that a meeting with Nawaz Sharif is scheduled for tomorrow, where efforts will be made to seek his agreement on the draft, with Bilawal’s role being crucial in building consensus. “We are still in touch with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and our aim is to secure full support from the House,” said the JUI-F chief, emphasizing that the amendment needs to be non-controversial and in the national interest.
Bilawal Bhutto, expressing gratitude to Maulana Fazlur Rehman, confirmed that they have been invited for a meal by Nawaz Sharif, where further discussions are expected. He highlighted that successful legislation has always been a result of collaboration between PPP and JUI-F, and a unified working relationship will continue to strengthen in the future.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman assured that the draft amendment was aimed at the country’s benefit rather than individual interests, emphasizing that all political parties share the responsibility of protecting the constitution. He also reiterated that the previous draft, which had been rejected earlier, is still unacceptable, and adjustments have been made to remove any elements weakening the country’s foundations.
The PPP chairman also urged a positive political approach, saying, “If PTI agrees, we will welcome their support. No deadlines are set, but we hope for a collaborative move forward.” He acknowledged that PTI has often created obstacles but expressed hope that political forces could unite for the country’s betterment.
The leaders also noted that inputs from legal experts are being considered, ensuring that any mistakes of the past are not repeated. “We will discuss the draft with other political parties as well. We want PTI to play a constructive role in politics,” Bilawal stated, adding that unity among all factions is the key to progress.
