Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif condemned the tragic killings of journalists in Gaza, urging global organizations to hold Israel accountable for what he described as a massacre. His remarks came on the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, highlighting the persistent threat faced by media personnel in conflict zones.
Prime Minister Sharif pointed out that, despite international agreements designed to protect them, many journalists have been targeted in Gaza to suppress the truth. “These brave individuals work diligently, often risking their lives to inform the world,” he stated, lamenting the dangers that journalists encounter.
He emphasized that the relentless pursuit of truth comes with significant risks, including violence, threats, and even murder. “Without the protection of journalists, true freedom of the press remains unattainable,” he said, reiterating the government’s commitment to creating a safer environment for media workers.
Sharif underscored that the Pakistani government has taken several measures to protect journalists, including the enactment of the Journalist and Media Workers Protection Act 2021. He also mentioned health insurance initiatives designed to support the wellbeing of journalists in Pakistan.
The Prime Minister expressed his resolve to combat crimes against journalists and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. He reaffirmed that the Constitution of Pakistan guarantees essential rights, such as freedom of expression and access to information, and pledged the government’s ongoing dedication to upholding these fundamental principles.
