Pro-Khalistan Leader Jagmeet Singh Resigns After Crushing Defeat, NDP Loses Official Status in Canada
Report By Safarti Tarjuman International Desk
Jagmeet Singh, leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP) and a pro-Khalistan figure, has formally conceded defeat in the federal elections and announced his resignation following a devastating loss in his own riding of Burnaby Central.
Singh, who had represented the seat since 2019, finished third in the race. The seat, formerly known as Burnaby South, was affected by recent electoral redistribution. The NDP, under Singh’s leadership, is projected to secure only 7 seats—falling short of the 12-seat threshold required to maintain official party status in the House of Commons.
The emotional concession came Tuesday evening at Singh’s campaign headquarters in Burnaby. In a visibly emotional address, Singh thanked his supporters and family, acknowledging the hard-fought campaign and expressing deep regret over the party’s results.
“This is a disappointing night for New Democrats,” Singh said, choking back tears. “We had really good candidates who won’t be able to represent their communities now.
He also offered congratulations to Liberal leader Mark Carney, who is set to form the next government.
Singh’s resignation will take effect once an interim NDP leader is chosen. The defeat marks the end of Singh’s tenure as the first person of color to lead a major federal political party in Canada.
“We choose politics because we believe in changing our country for the better,” Singh reflected. “Sometimes we lose, and those losses hurt.”
Jagmeet Singh has been a polarizing figure in Canadian politics, drawing criticism for his sympathetic stance toward the Khalistan separatist movement, which has strained Canada’s relations with India.
