
Pushkin’s 226th Birth Anniversary Celebrated at Russian Center in Lahore

LAHORE — A distinguished ceremony was held at the Russian Center for Science, Education, and Culture in Lahore to mark the 226th birth anniversary of Alexander Pushkin, Russia’s legendary poet, philosopher, and novelist. Recognized as the father of modern Russian literature, Pushkin’s contributions were celebrated through powerful tributes and cultural reflection.
Jointly organized by the Russian Center and the Association of Pakistani Graduates from Russia and CIS (APGR), the event gathered a diverse group of scholars, poets, intellectuals, journalists, and cultural enthusiasts.
Dr. Shahid Hassan, Chairman of the Russian Center and Ambassador of Russian Science and Education, presided over the ceremony. In his address, he highlighted Pushkin’s unmatched influence on Russian literary history and his enduring fight for freedom and justice through the written word.
Dr. Ashraf Nizami, Co-Chairman of the Russian Center and President of APGR, praised the Russian people’s deep-rooted culture of reading. He expressed optimism that world literary figures such as Pushkin would soon be included in Pakistan’s academic curricula to promote global literary awareness among youth.
President of the Pak-Russia Friendship Forum, Dr. Iftikhar Hussain Bukhari, emphasized the transformative power of Russian literature. He noted that Pushkin’s writings laid the ideological foundation for Russia’s historic revolutions and social awakening.
Renowned poet and publisher Khalid Sharif commended Dr. Shahid Hassan’s initiatives in promoting literary dialogue and pledged his full support for publishing efforts to expand Pushkin’s reach in Pakistan.
Other speakers, including Imtiaz-ul-Haq, Dr. Fariha Laiq, and senior journalist Khalid Farooqi, underscored Pushkin’s commitment to human rights and resistance against oppression. They described his poetry as a fearless call for justice and liberty during the era of Tsarist autocracy.
Speakers agreed that despite living only 38 years, Pushkin left behind a monumental literary legacy that continues to influence generations worldwide.
The ceremony reflected the growing cultural engagement between Pakistan and Russia. Attendees appreciated the Russian Center’s role in building mutual understanding through literary and educational programs.
