MOSCOW, Russian President Vladimir Putin has officially backed the establishment of a new national center dedicated to promoting the Russian language across the globe. The announcement came during a high-level meeting of the Presidential Council on State Policy for Language Development, held on Thursday.
Speaking at the session, President Putin emphasized the strategic importance of the initiative.
“I believe that creating a specialized center will significantly support the global promotion of the Russian language,” he said, instructing the Kremlin and federal agencies to begin developing the project.
The proposed center will function as a university-based interdepartmental scientific and methodological institution, designed to enhance Russia’s efforts in promoting Russian as a second language in various regions worldwide.
Nikita Gusev, acting chancellor of the Pushkin State Russian Language Institute, initially proposed the idea. Gusev highlighted that the new body would expand on the existing global infrastructure established by government entities such as the Foreign Ministry and cultural foundations.
“We aim to strengthen the international ecosystem supporting Russia’s linguistic and cultural presence,” Gusev said.
A more detailed framework for the center is expected to be presented at the next council session for final approval.
The center is seen as a cornerstone of Russia’s broader soft power strategy, aimed at boosting its cultural influence through language education. Organizations such as Russky Mir and Rossotrudnichestvo have already laid the groundwork for Russian language promotion, especially in post-Soviet states, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
The new center is expected to:
* Coordinate and expand international Russian language programs
* Develop standardized teaching methods and curriculum
* Train educators and linguists for global outreach
* Partner with foreign universities and cultural institutions
With the growing demand for Russian language skills in various regions and increasing interest in Russian literature, history, and science, the creation of this center marks a significant step forward. The initiative aligns with the Kremlin’s vision of reinforcing **Russia’s cultural identity and international outreach through strategic educational programs.
