Putin Approves Two-Year Extension of Russia’s National Defense Strategy
Report by Safarti Tarjuman International Desk
President Vladimir Putin has authorized an extension of Russia’s ongoing national defense strategy, pushing the plan’s timeframe from 2021–2025 to 2021–2027. The directive was signed into law on May 15 and officially published, confirming the updated duration.
The revised presidential decree modifies the existing strategic document by changing all references to “2021–2025” to “2021–2027,” thereby continuing the framework for two additional years.
The defense plan, originally adopted on November 12, 2020, outlines comprehensive measures aimed at enhancing Russia’s military readiness. It focuses on assessing national security risks, strengthening the armed forces, advancing weapons development programs, and preparing for potential military mobilization and territorial defense scenarios.
Russia’s inaugural national defense plan was established in January 2013, setting a precedent for strategic military planning based on evolving threats and defense capabilities. The extended strategy ensures continuity in addressing key defense priorities amid ongoing geopolitical challenges.
