Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Sunday that Russia possesses the necessary strength and resources to bring its military operation in Ukraine to a decisive end, while expressing hope that nuclear weapons will not be needed to achieve its goals.

Speaking in a state television documentary titled “Russia, Kremlin, Putin, 25 Years”, the Russian leader was interviewed beside a portrait of Tsar Alexander III, a 19th-century monarch known for his conservative rule and suppression of dissent.

“There has been no need to use those weapons, and I hope they will not be required,” Putin said, referring to Russia’s nuclear arsenal. “We have enough strength and means to bring what was started in 2022 to a logical conclusion with the outcome Russia requires.”

Putin’s remarks come as the war in Ukraine, which began with the Russian invasion in February 2022, continues to be the largest European ground conflict since World War II. The war has left hundreds of thousands dead or wounded and has dramatically reshaped global alliances.
