Putin Declares Russia Now Has Highest GDP in Europe

MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that Russia has overtaken all European countries to become the largest economy in Europe by gross domestic product (GDP), highlighting what he described as a “very significant” achievement.

Speaking during a televised briefing, President Putin emphasized that Russia’s economy has shown strong resilience and growth despite international sanctions and geopolitical pressures. “Today, Russia ranks first in Europe in terms of GDP,” he stated, adding that this development underscores the country’s rising economic stature on the global stage.

While official global economic rankings have not yet confirmed this status across all institutions, Putin cited national statistics and international estimates that place Russia ahead of major European economies like Germany and France.

The announcement follows recent reports by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank, which indicate robust growth in Russian industries including energy exports, agriculture, and defense manufacturing. The Russian ruble has also stabilized after volatility in previous years, bolstering confidence in domestic markets.

Putin credited “strategic fiscal policies” and “national unity” for enabling Russia to achieve this economic turnaround. “These are very significant indices,” he stressed, pointing to sustained GDP growth despite Western economic sanctions.

Economists and international observers remain cautious, noting that while Russia’s nominal GDP may show gains, other factors such as purchasing power parity (PPP), living standards, and inflation must also be considered.

Nonetheless, Putin’s declaration has reinforced the Kremlin’s narrative of economic self-sufficiency and global competitiveness, as Moscow continues to position itself as a key player in a shifting multipolar world order.
