Putin Updates North Korea’s Kim Jong on Upcoming US Talks

Moscow — Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday, updating him on planned high-level talks with U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska later this week, the Kremlin confirmed.

North Korea’s KCNA confirmed the leaders spoke but did not mention the upcoming Putin–Trump meeting, scheduled for Friday. Instead, Pyongyang’s state media emphasized discussions on strengthening bilateral ties under a strategic partnership agreement signed in 2024.

Putin expressed gratitude for North Korea’s military involvement in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, specifically acknowledging the role of the Korean People’s Army in operations within Russia’s Kursk region. He praised the “bravery, heroism, and self-sacrificing spirit” of North Korean troops.

According to South Korean intelligence assessments, over 10,000 North Korean troops have already been deployed to support Russia’s operations in western Russia, with plans reportedly underway for a second contingent to join the campaign.

KCNA quoted the two leaders as discussing “new stages of cooperation” under the strategic framework, aimed at expanding political, economic, and military collaboration.

The upcoming Alaska summit between Putin and Trump is expected to address Ukraine, international security, and strategic stability. While the Kremlin has not revealed whether North Korea’s role will be directly discussed, analysts note that Pyongyang’s growing military alignment with Moscow could be a behind-the-scenes topic.
