Following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria, rebel supporters have taken to the streets worldwide in jubilant celebration. In Athens, a group of demonstrators stormed the Syrian Embassy, raising the rebel flag atop the building, signaling the symbolic end of Assad’s decades-long rule.
Reports from local media indicate that the demonstrators breached the embassy compound and climbed to the roof to hoist the flag. Greek police intervened, detaining four individuals, but the flag remained flying.
Hundreds of anti-Assad protesters gathered outside the embassy, chanting slogans and celebrating the downfall of what they called a “brutal dictatorship.” Many tore down posters and photographs of Assad in a powerful display of defiance.
One protester, Olympiad Maroof, a 59-year-old Syrian, expressed his emotions:
“We have waited decades for this moment. The dictator is gone, and freedom is finally within reach. This is a victory for every Syrian.”
While Greek media reported that demonstrators had defaced Assad’s images within the embassy compound, police officials refrained from confirming specific details about the vandalism.
This embassy incident is one of many global acts of celebration by Syrians and their allies as they mark the end of an era and look forward to rebuilding their nation under new leadership.
