Religious Controversy Erupts Over ‘Jaat’ Movie: FIR Filed Against Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda in Indian (Punjab)
Report By Safarti Tarjuman Bollywood Desk
Bollywood action thriller ‘Jaat’, starring Sunny Deol and Randeep Hooda, has triggered major controversy after a scene in the film allegedly hurt the religious sentiments of the Christian community. An FIR has been registered by Jalandhar police against the actors, director Gopichand Malineni, and producers under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for “deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings.”
The complaint claims that a particular scene in the film, released on April 10, disrespects Jesus Christ. The scene in question reportedly features Randeep Hooda’s character standing beneath a crucifix inside a church, behaving aggressively while a congregation is engaged in prayer.
The complainant accused the filmmakers of intentionally releasing the film during Good Friday and Easter, suggesting it was done to provoke unrest within the Christian community and potentially incite nationwide tensions.
“The depiction was insensitive and offensive to the faith of millions of Christians across the country,” the complaint states, demanding an immediate ban on the film.
Who’s Involved and What’s Next?
Apart from Deol and Hooda, actor Vineet Kumar Singh, who also features in the movie, has been named in the FIR. The film includes a star-studded cast with Saiyami Kher, Regina Cassandra, Zarina Wahab, and Jagapathi Babu in supporting roles.
Directed by Gopichand Malineni — making his Hindi directorial debut after successes in Telugu cinema — ‘Jaat’ was released in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, earning an impressive ₹32 crore in its opening weekend.
Industry Response Awaited
While the filmmakers are yet to release an official statement regarding the FIR, the issue has sparked debate online, with many urging Bollywood to exercise greater sensitivity in portraying religious themes.
The producers, Mythri Movie Makers and People Media Factory, may face further legal scrutiny as protests intensify in some parts of Punjab.
