Romania’s Top Court Rejects Far-Right Simion’s Bid to Void Presidential Rerun
Report by Safarti Tarjuman International Desk
Romania’s Constitutional Court on Thursday unanimously rejected a petition by far-right presidential candidate George Simion to annul the results of Sunday’s rerun election, dismissing claims of foreign interference.
In its official statement, the court declared the request “unfounded” and confirmed that the decision is final. Full details of the court’s reasoning will be published at a later date.
Simion, a pro-Trump nationalist known for his opposition to EU policies and military aid to Ukraine, had lodged the appeal just two days after conceding defeat to centrist candidate and Bucharest mayor Nicușor Dan. Dan secured 53.6% of the vote against Simion’s 46.4%.
Despite accepting the vote count, Simion alleged interference from France and Moldova, claiming a coordinated campaign to influence Romanian institutions, media, and the election outcome. In a social media post following the ruling, he accused the court of continuing a “coup” and urged supporters to mobilize.
Sunday’s presidential rerun was ordered after the initial November 2024 election was annulled due to campaign finance irregularities and confirmed Russian disinformation activity. The new round was monitored closely and proceeded without major incidents.
