Russia Commemorates 80th Victory Day in Lahore, Urges Global Unity Against Nazism and Stronger Pakistan-Russia Ties

 

LAHORE, May 29 – The Russian Federation marked the 80th anniversary of its historic World War II victory over fascism with a grand ceremony in Lahore, emphasizing the global need to counter the resurgence of Nazism and promote international peace.

Russian Ambassador to Pakistan, Albert P. Khorev, led the commemorative event, lauding the Soviet Union’s sacrifice of over 30 million lives during World War II. He called on the world to unite in ensuring that fascism never re-emerges.

> “The Soviet Union’s unparalleled sacrifice will always be remembered. Today, we must unite to prevent the return of fascist ideologies,” Khorev stated.

Ambassador Khorev also appreciated Pakistan’s neutral and fact-based stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, acknowledging its role in promoting regional stability.

Hosted by the Russian Consulate in Lahore and the Russian Center for Science, Education, and Culture, in collaboration with the Lahore Press Club, the event brought together prominent Pakistani politicians, scholars, media representatives, and civil society members.

Notable Participants and Key Messages:

Honorary Consul Habib Ahmed termed Russia’s WWII victory as a victory for humanity, noting the growing ties with Pakistan in energy, trade, agriculture and especially education and culture.

PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira hailed the victory of the Soviet Union as a turning point in history, saying that the fall of fascism enabled nations like Pakistan to emerge in the post-war world order. Despite this, injustice continues today while tyrants roam free.

Deputy Ameer of the Jamaat-e-Islami, Liaquat Baloch called for conflict resolution, equitable development and close ties between Pakistan and Russia to promote regional peace. He stressed that we must provide hope to the hungry, unemployed, and those deprived of basic rights.

President of the Lahore Press Club, Arshad Ansari stressed the responsibility of the media in promoting strong relations between Pakistan and Russia. He highlighted the potential of the media in fostering deep bilateral relations. He said that through journalism and culture, we can bridge the gap between nations.

PTI’s Leader Ahmed Owais paid tribute to Russian sacrifices in WWII, stressing that their courage prevented the Nazis from entering Russian soil. He warned that where there is no justice, evil can prevail.

President of the Association of Pakistani Graduates from Russia Dr Ashraf Nizami reiterated the need to revive the spirit of 1945 in today’s conflict-ridden world. He praised Russia’s recognition of Pakistan’s peaceful diplomacy and supported an international investigation into recent acts of terrorism in Kashmir. He credited former US President Donald Trump for easing tensions between Pakistan and India.

Chairman of the Russian Center for Science, Education, and Culture Dr. Shahid Hasan highlighted the importance of youth and education in shaping future cooperation.

Dr Iftikhar Bukhari noted the rich history of literary and academic exchanges between Pakistan and Russia and called for further expansion.

The ceremony concluded with colorful cultural performances representing Pakistan’s provinces. Notably, a traditional dance based on the poetry of Baba Khushal Khan Khattak by Asfandyar Khattak captivated the audience.
