Russia Expels Two British Diplomats Over Espionage Allegations, UK Denies Charges
Russia has expelled two British diplomats, accusing them of engaging in intelligence activities that allegedly posed a threat to national security. The move marks another escalation in the ongoing diplomatic rift between Moscow and London.
The Federal Security Service (FSB) claimed on Monday that the diplomats misrepresented their purpose when entering Russia, violating its laws. Authorities further alleged they were involved in espionage and subversive operations. As a result, both diplomats were ordered to leave the country within 14 days.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also issued a warning to the UK Embassy, stating that if London retaliates, Russia will respond in kind.
The UK Foreign Office swiftly dismissed the claims, calling them “false and baseless.” A spokesperson reaffirmed, “This is not the first time Russia has made unfounded accusations against our diplomatic staff.”
The UK and Russia have been engaged in a series of diplomatic disputes, particularly after Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
- September 2024: Russia expelled six British diplomats, citing espionage concerns.
- November 2024: Another UK diplomat was removed over alleged intelligence activities.
- 2023: Russia barred hundreds of British officials and journalists, accusing the UK of fueling hostility.
This latest move coincides with crucial geopolitical developments. A Ukrainian delegation is set to meet US officials in Saudi Arabia for negotiations, while the UK recently hosted a European summit to strengthen support for Kyiv.
With diplomatic friction at an all-time high, the UK and Russia’s strained relations continue to deteriorate, raising concerns about further retaliatory measures.
