Russia Expresses Readiness to Mediate Between India and Pakistan Amid Kashmir Tensions

Report By Safarti Tarjuman International Desk

The Russian government has offered to assist in de-escalating rising tensions between India and Pakistan following a deadly militant attack in the Pahalgam region of Kashmir. The proposal came after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held a phone conversation with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar on Sunday.

According to an official statement released by the Russian Foreign Ministry, Lavrov and Dar discussed the deteriorating situation in South Asia, with a focus on the “growing strain” between New Delhi and Islamabad. Lavrov emphasized that Russia is prepared to support diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict, provided both countries express mutual interest.

The renewed tensions stem from an April 22 terrorist attack in the Baisaran area near Pahalgam in Indian-administered Kashmir, which claimed at least 26 lives. The victims included tourists and local residents. The incident has fueled public outrage and increased pressure on both governments amid fragile bilateral relations.

Kashmir, a disputed region claimed in full by both India and Pakistan, has long been a center of armed conflict, political unrest, and military standoffs between the two nations. Over the decades, the region has witnessed several wars, ongoing insurgency movements, and strained diplomatic ties.

Despite being one of India’s key defense partners for decades, Russia has positioned itself as a potential neutral facilitator for regional peace. Moscow reiterated that its role in any mediation process would be purely supportive and only activated upon joint approval from New Delhi and Islamabad.
