Russia Frees American Teacher Marc Fogel, Trump Hints at Diplomatic Progress
American citizen Marc Fogel, who had been imprisoned in Russia since 2021, has been released and returned to the United States. His release is being viewed as a diplomatic breakthrough, with former President Donald Trump suggesting it could help advance negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.
Fogel, a history teacher from Pennsylvania, was serving a 14-year sentence after being arrested for carrying medical marijuana. The White House confirmed that Steve Witkoff, a special envoy for Trump, facilitated his return.
Upon his arrival at the White House, Fogel was greeted by Trump, draped in an American flag. Expressing gratitude, he stated that he was deeply thankful for the efforts made to secure his freedom.
Media reporters, Trump said, “Russia very well treated. Hopefully, this is the beginning of something that will help bring peace.” When asked if any deal had been made in exchange for Fogel’s release, he responded, “Not much,” without providing further details.
Trump also hinted at another American prisoner being released on Wednesday, referring to them as “someone very special.” However, he did not disclose their identity or the country they were detained in.
Fogel was previously classified as wrongfully detained by the Biden administration in December 2021, and his case had drawn international attention. Russia has not yet issued an official statement regarding his release.
