Kyiv, Ukraine — Russia launched a rare overnight missile and drone attack on western Ukraine, striking multiple sites including an American-owned electronics factory, officials confirmed Thursday. The strike raises tensions just as the United States leads renewed efforts to broker peace in the three-year-old war.
The assault marked one of Moscow’s most extensive operations in the region this year, hitting an area that has so far seen limited bombardment since the conflict erupted in February 2022. The timing coincides with ongoing diplomatic negotiations between U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces struck facilities linked to Ukraine’s defense industry, including drone factories, missile depots, and troop positions. Moscow insisted civilian areas were not targeted.
But President Zelenskyy rejected the claim, stating that “the Russians deliberately burned down an American-owned company producing household electronics, not military equipment.” He described the attack as a direct strike on U.S. investments in Ukraine and a signal against peace negotiations.
The airstrikes came just days after Trump met Putin in Alaska and later hosted Zelenskyy and European leaders in Washington to discuss terms for a potential ceasefire. Moscow, however, has expressed objections to key aspects of the proposed peace framework.
“This was a deliberate act to disrupt global negotiations,” Zelenskyy said on social media platform X. “As the world waits for Russia’s answer on peace, it responded with missiles.”
Trump has repeatedly questioned Putin’s commitment to peace, saying the Russian leader “talks nice and then bombs everybody.” On Thursday, Trump criticized former President Joe Biden for not supplying Ukraine with enough weapons during his term, adding that Ukraine cannot win without “taking the fight to the invader’s territory.”
The White House has not yet clarified whether Trump plans to expand the scope of U.S. military support to Kyiv following the latest escalation.
The strike on an American-owned facility highlights the growing risks to foreign investments in Ukraine and threatens to derail fragile peace talks. Analysts warn the attack could harden U.S. and European positions, making negotiations with Moscow even more difficult in the weeks ahead.
