Russia has reportedly launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) at Ukraine, marking a historic first in modern warfare.
Ukrainian military sources have confirmed the use of the RS-26 ICBM, a missile with capabilities similar to those of a nuclear warhead delivery system. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has also stated that the missile used in the strike was consistent with the specifications of an ICBM.
Russia has not yet officially acknowledged or denied the missile attack, but this development follows recent changes to Russia’s nuclear doctrine, signaling potential for more dangerous military moves.
Should Ukraine’s report prove accurate, this would be the first recorded use of an ICBM in an active military conflict. ICBMs, known for their nuclear payloads, are a central component of Russia’s strategic defense.
The RS-26 Rubezh, which Ukraine’s sources claim was used, is a solid-fuel missile with a range of 5,800 kilometers. First tested in 2012, the RS-26 can carry a 800-kilogram nuclear warhead and measures 40 feet in length and 36 tons in weight.
