Russia Rejects U.S. Ceasefire Proposal in Ukraine
Russia has refused to accept the U.S.-proposed ceasefire in Ukraine, arguing that it fails to address the “root causes” of the war, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated on Tuesday.
Ryabkov emphasized that Moscow takes U.S. proposals seriously but cannot accept them in their current form. His comments come as President Donald Trump pushes for a swift resolution to the conflict, which has now entered its fourth year.
Trump’s administration has been engaged in negotiations with both Russia and Ukraine, but significant progress remains elusive. Russian President Vladimir Putin previously dismissed a joint U.S.-Ukrainian proposal for a 30-day ceasefire and suggested that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should be removed as part of a broader peace settlement.
For Russia, the “root causes” of the conflict include Ukraine’s control over contested regions and its bid for NATO membership—key demands that Putin has reiterated as essential for any lasting peace agreement.
