Russia Returns 1,000 Bodies of Ukrainian Soldiers

Kyiv — Russia has handed over the remains of 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers, including five who reportedly died while in Russian captivity, Ukrainian and Russian authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, the handover was conducted under agreements reached during peace talks in Istanbul earlier this summer.

According to Ukrainian officials, the majority of the soldiers were killed in Donetsk, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia, while others lost their lives in Russia’s Kursk region, which Ukrainian forces briefly entered during a cross-border offensive last August.

Kremlin adviser and chief negotiator Vladimir Medinsky confirmed the transfer, noting that Russia received 19 bodies in exchange. He added that the arrangement mirrored a similar exchange conducted on July 17, when another 1,000-for-19 handover took place under the Istanbul framework.

The latest exchange is being viewed as a cautious confidence-building measure between Moscow and Kyiv, despite ongoing heavy fighting across eastern Ukraine.
