ST. PETERSBURG — Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has sharply criticized Western media for failing to highlight the nuclear threat posed by the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, warning that strikes near nuclear sites could spark a disaster with global consequences.
Speaking at the 19th General Assembly of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Zakharova said it was “remarkable” how Western coverage continued to overlook the nuclear dimension of the Israel-Iran confrontation.
She pointed out that media in the West are focusing narrowly on casualty figures, missile strike tallies, and destruction imagery, while ignoring the severe implications of attacks near nuclear facilities.
Zakharova cautioned that the perception of so-called “precision strikes” being controlled and safe is dangerously misleading. “We’ve already seen missiles veer off course, sparking fires and explosions far from their intended targets,” she said.
“Radiation doesn’t recognize passports or borders,” she emphasized. “It seeps into the environment — into water, air, and soil — and can remain for decades, silently affecting human health and ecosystems.”
Her remarks come amid the SPIEF 2025, themed “Shared Values: The Foundation of Growth in a Multipolar World.” The forum features discussions on global security, economic innovation, and geopolitical cooperation, including special platforms such as the SME Forum, Creative Industries Forum, and Roscongress Urban Hub.
TASS, the host of the OANA session, serves as the official information partner of SPIEF. Zakharova’s warning adds urgency to growing international calls for de-escalation and a reassessment of military strategies involving nuclear-risk zones.
