Moscow: Russian air defense systems intercepted a drone approaching Moscow on Saturday, triggering temporary flight suspensions at several regional airports, officials confirmed.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the drone was destroyed before it could reach the capital. Fragments of the unmanned aerial vehicle were recovered and are under examination. No casualties or infrastructure damage were reported.

Russia’s aviation regulator, Rosaviatsia, announced that multiple airports—including Izhevsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Penza, Tambov, and Ulyanovsk—temporarily halted operations due to security concerns.

Airports in St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city, also experienced significant delays, with dozens of flights affected, according to local media.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported that air defense forces destroyed 32 drones within three hours across several central regions, highlighting ongoing threats to Russian airspace security.

Officials stressed that such interceptions were vital to safeguarding critical infrastructure and civilian safety.
