ODESA — A Russian drone strike on a residential area of Ukraine’s southern port city of Odesa has killed two people and wounded 14, including three children, local officials confirmed on Saturday.
Odesa Governor Oleh Kiper announced that emergency teams recovered the bodies from the rubble of a building hit in the overnight attack. “Rescuers pulled the bodies of two people from the rubble who died as a result of a hostile drone strike,” Kiper posted on Telegram.
Fourteen civilians were wounded in the attack, with children among those hurt, he added.
The deadly strike comes as Russia ramps up missile and drone assaults on Ukrainian cities following the breakdown of peace negotiations backed by the United States to end the nearly three-year war.
In a separate attack, Russian shelling killed one person and injured three more in Ukraine’s Kherson region, where residential neighborhoods and critical infrastructure were targeted, according to Kherson Governor Oleksandr Prokudin.
The war, which has devastated much of eastern Ukraine, has claimed tens of thousands of lives and forced millions from their homes since Russia launched its invasion in 2022.
Ukraine has responded with its own drone strikes on Russian targets throughout the conflict.
On Saturday, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed its air defense systems had downed 31 Ukrainian drones overnight. Moscow also reported seizing control of another village in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, which Russia annexed in late 2022 despite international condemnation.
Russian leaders continue to demand Ukraine cede additional territory and renounce Western military support as conditions for peace — terms Kyiv says are completely unacceptable.
